![]() It is impressive how easy it is to fall in love with the characters and the world of Oneshot in so short a time. Above all, the dialogue is great and the characters are lovable. The puzzles are well thought out, tricky, but far from impossible. The art is gorgeous, resplendent with vivid glowing hues. Oneshot is as original and powerful as they come. The notion of such permanence, the idea that the game can only be played once, has been done before, but not like this. If you give up and quit the game early, or even if you accidentally close the window, Niko dies and you can't continue. ![]() The gravity of the situation intensifies upon realizing what the title of the game means. Suddenly, this is not simply a silly, fun game you are choosing to play, but a responsibility to help save this world and return Niko to his home. This revelation comes early on in the game, but it changes the entire dynamic of the experience. You are the god of this world, and its inhabitants need your help. However, it's not just Niko's story, but yours too. Niko's been transported to a strange world without a sun, one that is falling apart, and he is the one who is destined to save it. Oneshot follows the story of a little cutie named Niko, a small but brave boy with cat whiskers and glowing, bright yellow eyes. Still reading, eh? Alright, dear readers, but never let it be said that you were not warned. There are three moments throughout the game where you can save and quit safely, and you'll know them when you find them, but that's it. Luckily, this reviewer's hardware is sturdy enough that I was able to see everything through to the end, but other players have told horror stories of computers shutting off mid-game and losing everything. Oh, one last thing: put some time aside, because once you begin, you can't stop playing it for at least a little while. All the information you need is the controls: move your character with the keys, perform actions and use items with or, and use to open the menu. Don't even read any comments before you start, or it will be spoiled for you. This is a game about exploration and mystery, the kind of experience you're meant to have with as little prior knowledge as possible. With such an intentionally vague description, it is difficult for any player to have any idea what this game is really about-and that's the point. The game's co-developers, Mathew Velasquez and Casey Gu, describe the experience as a mission to "guide a lost child through a strange world, utilizing items, characters, and the environment to progress." That could describe most any adventure game. ![]() It's not a horror game, but it is certainly atmospheric and has a few untraditionally "creepy" moments. No, it's not a room escape, though the game's first few minutes would certainly have you believe so. Made for the 2014 Indie Game Maker contest and downloadable free for PC, Mac and Linux, Oneshot is a puzzle-based adventure which plays only in windowed mode, and yes, there is a reason for that. And this is the first view you'll have of the breathtaking world of Oneshot. The clean hardwood floor is partly covered by a soft looking purple carpet. Warm light filters in through a foggy window, bathing everything in a pinkish hue. The small room is empty save for an old computer, desk and bookshelf. This bed is not your own you've never even seen this house before. You wake to find yourself in a strange place.

The priorities I have today are not the same ones I held a few years ago. But each of these ideas would cause Kramer to change, to do something. There is the bake your own pizza pizzeria, the refillable necktie dispenser and the rubber bladder for oil tankers. He is constantly coming up with new ideas. But that comfort can often lead us to laziness. We embrace the status quo because of the comfort it provides. ![]() ![]() We resist change and growth throughout our lives. Unfortunately, this is often an accurate representation of the real world. In Seinfeld, a world where there is no learning, there is also no growth. This makes for good comedy, but not for a healthy life. But as soon as he makes this commitment he becomes wracked with regret. In another situation, George becomes engaged to his girlfriend, Susan. His experience is unfulfilling and denigrated by his friends. In one episode George longs to tell a girlfriend that he loves her, but when he does, she doesn’t reciprocate. The characters in Jerry’s world move through life without ever expressing emotions. And although the Seinfeld crew never learned anything, there is a lot that we can learn from them. There was never a concluding tear or hug of solidarity. There were certainly dilemmas, but no one learned lessons. Where traditional sitcoms include a dilemma for the characters that they must overcome and a lesson that they must learn, Seinfeld, resisted that formula. The writing is articulate, creative, original and very funny.īut Seinfeld, the show that was famously about nothing, had one essential theme: “No hugging, no learning.” The guiding philosophy for creators Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David was that the characters should never learn anything or change. That is why there are some episodes (and by some episodes I mean, The Chinese Restaurant) that I can quote along with Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer. That is why there are “seinfeldisms” in my everyday language. The more time I spend with my favorite show, the more I realize that it is all about the writing. ![]() But it is not the actors, the characters or the chemistry that are most important. ![]() I hate it when I anticipate an “impending intestinal requirement.” Not that there’s anything wrong with that.įor me Seinfeld is the perfect blend of four unusual characters that had an uncommon chemistry on screen. Replacing the tissue in the bathroom requires a long recitation about the importance of being able to “spare a square.” I always want to get credit for purchasing the “big salad.” And if it were possible, I would only shop at the jerk store. The discourse of our family has changed as well. Even when I don’t participate in a full-blown celebration, I recognize December 23 as a “Festivus for the rest of us.” To avoid an uncomfortable discussion I might offer a yada yada. We now talk about “puffy shirts,” “soup nazis,” and being “Master of your domain.” I now know what a close talker, a low talker and a sidler are. It is not lost on me that much of the vocabulary of Seinfeld has entered into our national conversation. I’m sure that it takes a special sense of humor to get as much joy from Seinfeld as I do, but these episodes never get old for me. In fact, I think that I will likely believe this for the next 20 years. I know that there is no objective way to determine the quality or inherent “goodness” of one show over another, but I have maintained for the last 20 years or so that this statement is true. Seinfeld is the best American television program ever. ![]() Following the storing part, we have used the function to stack the 3-D array in a vertical manner (row-wise). I am actually very hesitant to say that GL9 is good… I am not sure it really is. Also, as a long time GL user, the new UI in GL9 is confusing and it is hard to find what you are used to find in no time as it is so different to CS2 and earlier. Well … As a long time user of both GoLive (since version 1) and InDesign (since version 1) I don’t agree with David that they are similar to work with. The news about them suggesting GL users move to DW on the GL product page, combined with the almost-impossible upgrade price, tells me there’s a war going on over there between the development team and the marketing/strategy team, and the latter has won. I’ve been using it for years and without David’s post I wouldn’t have known it was actually released or that it had such intriguing new features. I’m incredibly disappointed with how Adobe has handled the release of GL9. Luckily GL CS2 runs like a top on my MacIntel. I plan on looking at the tryout and fiddling with it but it would take a heckuva lot of Must Have Features in it for me to convert the 20+ sites we designed and maintain in GL CS2 to GL9 (or DW for that matter). Otherwise, it’s only the four people on the planet who purchased a new copy of GoLive in one of its Suite versions who can upgrade. So, *if* you purchased GL 6, and can find its serial number, then you can get the upgrade. You have to have a *standalone* serial number for GL - not one that came from your CS, CS1 or CS2 suite - to get it. And not good, imo.Īlso, very few people will be able to get GL9 for the upgrade price. Preliminary reports from GL9 users on the GoLive Talk listerv are mixed it’s super fast, but GL9 is automatically rewriting code with superfluous CSS calls when you (for example) resize an image. GoLive historically has had pristine code and a much more accessible, powerful and human-friendly interface for editing that code than DW. And its fans said “this is the program to use if you just want to design, without worrying about arcane PDF settings.” Imagine a layout program that let you create a PDF to hand off to a printer but used all sorts of non-compliant settings in the background. Professional web site design requires as much attention to standards and practices as print design. (“As long as it works, who cares about the code …” Well, any self-respecting web designer does.) I have not yet tried GL9 but as a long-time GL user/site designer, I would hate to see GL become a sort of MS FrontPage gibberish code monster. We’re all just looking for an excuse to learn something new anyway, right? In all honesty, if we’ve been able to learn the craft of “print” media and all it’s complexities, we can surely learn how to build a website (and more). What? Am I not smart enough to learn Dreamweaver? How hard can it be, right?įorgive my rant, I just think that if DW is a better web solution, why not concentrate on making it friendlier (although it already is), and encourage us “print” guys to do a little extra credit work and learn the program. But, honestly, I feel like someone’s insulting my intelligence. They even tried to make GL look and feel more like InDesign. Now, I can understand the issue of making it easier for InDesigners to venture into the web world. What was Adobe thinking with the move to update GoLive? As Mordy Golding pointed out, when you go to the Adobe GoLive page, you can’t help but wonder why Adobe has so prominently highlighted the article about switching from GL to DreamWeaver. To me, these news leave me very confused. I’m not sure of the non-US prices… perhaps someone can post those below. GoLive 9 is available new for US$399 or as an upgrade for $169. The irony that GoLive 9 is far more like a Creative Suite 3 app than Dreamweaver CS3 is poignant to those of us who wish this program were in the Suite (alongside Dreamweaver). In fact the UI is so much like InDesign that it’s really easy to work with even if you’ve never used the program before. ![]() I’m excited about many of the new features, including the ability to lay out Web pages using a much more “page layout”/InDesign user interface. But if you’re a GoLive user or you’re a design professional who wants to build sites without having to constantly dip into HTML or CSS code, then you owe it to yourself to check out this new version. If you prefer Dreamweaver, then please don’t bother sharing your flames here just go ahead and keep using it. True, Adobe dropped GoLive from the Creative Suite 3, but many GoLive users are hoping to stick with this great program. You might not have noticed if you wandered by recently, but Adobe just shipped GoLive 9–the much-anticipated (for some of us) update for what some consider the best Web authoring tool around.
